General Advice for Diabetes Patient While Traveling

  • Always carry insulin supplies or tablets with you in your hand luggage. Insulin will freeze in the baggage hold of an aircraft.

  • If prone to travel sickness, take anti-sickness tablets before setting off.

  • Inform the air stewardesses that you have diabetes. You may receive priority meal service.

  • Have carbohydrate-containing snacks and glucose available, in case you need them,

  • On long-haul flights, flex your feet and leg muscles frequently and stand up and walk about occasionally.

  • While away, be careful about what you eat. It is safest to drink bottled water.

  • Remember that heat affects diabetes control/insulin absorption etc. Test blood or urine frequently to keep a check on glycaemic control.

  • Avoid sunburn and stay in the shade as much as possible; those with NEUROPATHY are at increased risk.

  • Protect your feet and always wear sandals or canvas shoes on the beach. Remember that feet may swell in the heat so ensure that shoes are roomy and comfortable.

  • Watch your alcohol consumption and stick to recommended guidelines. If you eat more than normal, remember that you may need to adjust your insulin.

  • If you become ill, seek prompt medical help and do not delay because you are in an unfamiliar environment.
